Price can affect your choice of ED pills
Understanding the Differences Between Erectile Dysfunction Drugs
Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects about half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 to some degree, although only about 10% experience a complete inability to achieve an erection. Fortunately, ED medications help approximately 70% of otherwise healthy men achieve an erection sufficient for intercourse.
But does it matter which ED drug you take? According to Dr. Louis Liou, chief of urology at Harvard-affiliated Cambridge Health Alliance, the answer is yes. "For new patients, I have them try different medications to see which one works best," he explains.
Common Erectile Dysfunction Medications
The most commonly prescribed ED drug is sildenafil (Viagra). It has been on the market the longest, and its side effects, drug interactions, and dietary restrictions are well understood. However, there are three other FDA-approved ED medications—tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), and avanafil (Stendra)—each with unique benefits, durations of action, and side effect profiles.
Choosing the Right Medication
Sometimes, your choice of ED medication is influenced less by biochemistry and more by factors like insurance coverage. Many insurance plans limit the number of ED pills covered per month. Once you reach that limit, the cost per pill can increase significantly.
Dr. Liou emphasizes that cost is often the main obstacle in treatment. It is important to work closely with your healthcare provider to find a medication that works well and fits within your budget.
