Will a pill really help your sex life?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs have become more accessible than ever, and the stigma around using them is fading. Still, many men approach ED medication with unrealistic expectations.

“Men feel their sex life is not good and see an ED drug as an easy, quick-fix solution. But more times than not, there are underlying issues at play that a pill can't help,” explains Dr. Louis Liou, chief of urology at Harvard-affiliated Cambridge Health Alliance.

Understanding Erectile Dysfunction and ED Drugs

ED specifically refers to difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. While other sexual health issues like low libido or premature ejaculation exist, ED drugs only address the blood flow problems that cause erection difficulties.

Currently, four FDA-approved ED medications are available:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra)

  • Avanafil (Stendra)

  • Tadalafil (Cialis)

  • Vardenafil (Levitra)

About 70% of men find success with at least one of these drugs, but individual results vary. Those with nerve or artery damage from prostate surgery, diabetes, or heart disease may respond less effectively.

Finding the Right ED Medication for You

Choosing the right medication often involves some trial and error. Dr. Liou notes, “Many doctors first prescribe Viagra because it has been around the longest and has a high success rate.” If one medication doesn’t work after a set time, your doctor might adjust the dose or try another option.

How ED Pills Work and What to Expect

ED drugs typically take effect within 15 minutes to an hour and last from 4–5 hours up to 24 hours or more, depending on the medication. For best results, avoid taking the pill with or immediately after a meal, as food can interfere with absorption.
