What is colon cancer and why it matters in men’s health

Colon cancer, also called colorectal cancer, occurs when abnormal cells form in the lining of the colon or rectum and begin to grow uncontrollably. It’s the third most common cancer in men, but also one of the most preventable through routine screening and early detection.

Most colorectal cancers begin as small, benign polyps that can take years to become cancerous. When found early, these can be safely removed before becoming life-threatening. However, symptoms often don’t appear until the cancer has already advanced, making proactive screening vital.

Why Men Should Pay Attention:

  • 1 in 23 men will be diagnosed with colon cancer in their lifetime

  • Regular screening can reduce the risk of death by over 50%

  • The FIT test (used by Bastion Health) detects hidden blood in stool with 79% sensitivity for early-stage cancer and 94% specificity, helping catch cancer earlier when it's most treatable

  • Risk rises sharply after age 45, especially with a family history, diets high in red or processed meat, low physical activity, smoking, or chronic inflammation (e.g., Crohn’s disease)

Take control of your long-term health with a simple, non-invasive screening solution. Colon cancer is highly preventable—early detection saves lives.

Symptoms and screening of colon cancer in men

  • Colon cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages, which is why proactive screening is essential. However, signs may include:

    • Persistent changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or narrow stools)

    • Blood in the stool (bright red or dark and tarry)

    • Abdominal pain, bloating, or cramping

    • Unexplained weight loss

    • Fatigue or low energy

    • A feeling of incomplete bowel emptying

    • Nausea or vomiting in later stages

Only about 10% of colorectal cancers are caught early due to lack of symptoms. Early screening helps detect the disease before it spreads.

  • Men with certain risk factors should screen earlier and more frequently:

    • Age 45 or older

    • Family history of colon cancer or polyps

    • Diet high in red or processed meat

    • Low fiber intake

    • Sedentary lifestyle and obesity

    • Smoking or heavy alcohol use

    • Chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes or inflammatory bowel disease

  • Our primary tool for colon cancer screening is the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)—a non-invasive, lab-analyzed test that detects hidden blood in stool.

    • Annual screening recommended for average-risk adults starting at age 45

    • 94% sensitivity for detecting colorectal cancer

    • 95% specificity, minimizing false positives

    • Easy-to-use test shipped to your home—no clinic visit required

    • Results shared via a secure virtual platform

Colon cancer diagnosis and support

  • Human hemoglobin (blood) in stool

    • Specifically detects hidden (occult) blood from the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, such as the colon or rectum.

    • Uses antibodies to detect the globin portion of human hemoglobin.

    • Unlike older guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests (gFOBT), the FIT does not react to animal blood or food, so no dietary restrictions are needed.

These focused parameters make FIT a highly specific and diet-independent tool for identifying bleeding caused by polyps or colorectal cancer—often before symptoms appear.

  • A positive FIT result does not mean you have cancer—it means blood was detected in your stool and further evaluation is needed. Bastion Health supports you through every next step with expert guidance and compassionate care.

    We provide:

    • Telehealth consultation to review your results with a licensed provider

    • Referral to a trusted specialist for a diagnostic colonoscopy

    • Navigation support to coordinate follow-up appointments and care

If polyps or early-stage cancer are found, they can often be removed during colonoscopy, which can prevent progression and improve outcomes.

We also help coordinate gastroenterology assessments and referrals to surgery centers when needed—ensuring a clear path forward from screening to diagnosis and treatment.

  • While Bastion Health does not treat colon cancer directly, we provide expert guidance and support for:

    • Precancerous polyps

    • Abnormal screening results

    • Early-stage colon cancer (with referral to specialists)

    • Gastrointestinal symptoms that may need further evaluation

We ensure you have a clear path forward—whether it's lifestyle changes, further diagnostic testing, or specialist referrals.

 FAQs

  • You should take a FIT test once a year starting at age 45, or earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer or other risk factors. Annual testing helps catch changes early—when they're most treatable.

  • A positive result means blood was detected in your stool. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer—but it does mean you need follow-up testing, usually a diagnostic colonoscopy, to find the cause. Bastion Health will connect you with a trusted specialist and help coordinate next steps.

  • Our screening includes a discreet at-home stool-based test that detects hidden blood and biomarkers linked to colon cancer. It’s easy to use, clinically validated, and comes with clear follow-up through telehealth.

  • If your results show abnormalities, Bastion Health providers will guide your next steps—including referrals for a colonoscopy or specialist care. We support you through every stage of diagnosis and care planning.
